SurfPedia™ History of Surfing

by Skip Snead

1930
*Surfing is introduced in Peru after a Peruvian surfer travel to Hawaii, learns to surf, then returns home to find plenty of surf and not a single surfer.

1932
*Tom Blake's Olo Usu and the hardwood composite "Waikiki" style surfboard is the preferred board of choice. Blake's "Cigar style" hollow paddleboard, 16 feet in length, is also very popular.

1935
*San Onofre, a series of gentle-breaking waves at the San Diego/Orange County border, is the most popular surf spot on the California coast.
*National Geographic publishes several photos taken of surfers at Waikiki by surfer Tom Blake from his paddleboard. These photos spark the birth of modern surf photography.

1938
*A 10'6" C Tucker "Slantwise" ultra-light paddle board made out of pine is the preferred board of choice for surfers in the know.
